Chapter 6

The Business Of Chaos

"We need to get you out of here."

Fafnir looked up from toweling his hair dry, regarding his new lover with a healthy dose of skepticism. "And where the hell would I go?"

"My place." Hermes had that open, you-can-trust-me smile on, the one that made him look like trouble.

"Uh-huh. Don't you have family coming in and out all the time? I appreciate what you want to do, but you really want them and you in the line of fire?"

The smile fell and Fafnir was quickly coming to realize that the serious Hermes was even more dangerous. "You can't tell me not to get involved. Way too late for that. As for my family, they're a bunch of busybodies who are also already involved. You get one of us, you get a whole tribe."

"But only the ones you're on speaking terms with, right? Some of your relatives...I don't really want to deal with, say, Ares."

Hermes laughed, a soft, musical sound that went straight to Fafnir's balls. "Don't worry. I only deal with the cool parts of the family. Uncle Hades is a little, oh, intimidating. But you know, Lord of the Dead and all. He's a little better now that he and Aunt Persephone divorced."

"They...divorced? Not something you'd expect."

"Well, it never really was a love match. She wanted her own life. He didn't know what he wanted until he found Ti. She still does the six months in the Underworld thing. Bringer of spring and all that. And you're dancing around the question. Big time."

"I can't leave my work. Still trying to work to a deadline here."

Hermes waved a hand toward the studio. "So pack up what you need. I'll call for a car. We'll take anything you want with us. Your supplies, your drafting table, even your floor safe."

Fire-nettle prickles rushed up Fafnir's spine, his lungs constricting as anger gathered as a throbbing knot at the base of his skull. "That's what this is about, isn't it? You want my hoard where you can get your fucking hands on it anytime you want!"

"Whoa." Hermes held up both hands and backpedaled three steps. "Or leave it here and lock the place up. Whatever makes you happy. You know I could've taken your pretties anytime I wanted. You also know I haven't."

"You--" Fafnir rubbed a hand over the back of his neck, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension. "No. I know. Sorry. This, the jealous temper, it'll only get worse from here."

"We'll do the best we can with it. So, get dressed and I'll help you pack."

"You're a bossy little twerp, aren't you?" Fafnir wandered into his bedroom, not at all sure he even wanted to get dressed. "And I don't like the idea of running."

"It's not running. It's a tactical maneuver carried out ahead of your enemies."

Fafnir shot him a dry as bone dust look. "Euphemism for retreat?"

"Reconfiguring the field. Choosing the terrain."

"You're going to keep pestering me, aren't you?"

Hermes caught his arm and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.
